Rays mean business

Big news as the Rays announce that we've signed Evan Longoria to a 9-year deal worth $44,000,000 (including options). That is one good sign that the front office are serious about building a contender. I for one am very pleased.

Slightly stranger news is our claiming 1B/DH Dan Johnson off of waivers from Oakland. Ok, so Pena has a sore hamstring, but why do we need to pick up a bit-part player to cover? We have plenty of options in the short term - Hinske can do fine at first, with Jonny DHing. I really don't see the need.

Anyhow, I'm sure that more will follow on both fronts over the weekend...

Hey again John!
Just wanted to very much agree with you that signing Longo long term was a great idea, when I got that email I went nuts. Good job by the management there.

Definitely, I'm really pleased they've signed him up - its not just good to have him around for the long term, it demonstrates to the fans that they're serious.

Again about the little Johnson thing; if we wouldn't have done that, we could have picked up Frank Thomas whom the Jays just released and who I still think could play as a PH/DH a little and when Pena is hurt, he could play 1B. Not sure he'd be too happy about it though...

I think Thomas would be a great pick-up still - but I guess its probably unlikely that we'd go after him, partly because of signing Johnson, and partly because Cliff Floyd shouldn't be out that long.
